PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a base oil for a refrigerator oil, containing a monopentaerythritol fatty acid tetraester in a high concentration and having a color of at most 300 (as measured by the APHA method) and to provide a process for producing a base oil for a refrigerator oil reduced in a decoloration load in good yields. SOLUTION: Provided is a base oil for a refrigerator oil, comprising an ester obtained from pentaerythritol and a 4-18C saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid or its derivative, wherein the ester comprises 96.00-99.95 wt.% monopentaerythritol fatty acid tetraester and having a color of at most 300 (as measured by the APHA method), and a process for producing a base oil for a refrigerator, containing an ester produced from pentaerythritol and a 4-18C saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid or its derivative, wherein the pentaerythritol used has a monopentaerythritol concentration of 97.00-99.95 wt.% and having a color of at most 300 (as measured by the APHA method).
