PURPOSE: A cathode of a cathode ray tube is provided to avoid life time reduction due to an intermediate layer and accomplish stable electron emission for a long time and high current density. CONSTITUTION: A cathode of a cathode ray tube comprises a pellet(5) of electron emission material, a metal cup(6), a sleeve(2), and a heater(3). The pellet(5) is formed by at least one alkaline earth metal oxide selected from a group of BaO, SrO and CaO, at least one oxide selected from a group of Eu2O3, La2O3 and Sc2O3, at least one reduction agent selected from a group of Ni, W, Mg, Si and Mo, and Ba compound. The amount of the oxide is 0.1 to 20 wt.% relative to a total amount of the electron emission material. The metal cup(6) is made of heat-resisting metal for accepting the pellet(5). The sleeve(2) accepts the metal cup inside its top. The heater(3) is arranged in the sleeve(2) for heating the metal cup(3).
