PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for granulating a slightly water-soluble azo compound in a state free from a danger such as explosion substantially without deteriorating the quality of the azo compound, and to provide the granules not containing such an impurity as affecting polymerization reactions. SOLUTION: This method for granulating a slightly water-soluble azo compound of formula (1) [R1 and R2 are each identically or differently a 1 to 10C alkyl, a carboxy-substituted 1 to 4C alkyl or phenyl which may have a substituent; R1 and R2 bound to the same carbon atom may together form an aliphatic ring; R3 is cyano, acetoxy, carbamoyl or (1 to 4C alkoxy)carbonyl] has a characteristic comprising using a solvent which can dissolve the azo compound in a concentration of >=1×10-3 wt.% at 20 deg.C and has a boiling point of <=100 deg.C.
