PURPOSE:To detect whether or not a loaded tape is run normally by providing a pulse generating means generating a pulse attended with the rotation of a reel different from a driven reel and a discriminating means discriminating whether or not a pulse is outputted. CONSTITUTION:The pulse generating means 3, 5 generating a pulse attended with the rotation of a reel S1 different from a reel S2 driven by a reel drive means 2 and the pulse detecting means 1a detecting whether or not a pulse is outputted from the pulse generating means are provided. An optical sensor 5 as the pulse generating means receives a reflected light from the reflecting part 3a of a rotary disk 3 to generate a pulse signal. When no tape cassette is loaded or the disabled tape running such as open tape recording medium in a loaded tape cassette takes place, since the reel to be driven is not rotated, no pulse is generated from the pulse generating means and the state is easily detected.
