PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To especially enhance the image quality of a pattern area by minimizing mis-discrimination as to whether or not as area is a character area. SOLUTION: In the case of discrimination of 'no character area' by an image area separation processing section 3 and a counter 4 in the preliminary scanning, a 'pattern-weighted' coefficient is set to a 2nd smoothing processing section 7. In the case of discrimination of 'presence of character area' in the main scanning, the 2nd smoothing processing section 7 smoothes an image by using the 'pattern-weighted' coefficient and an edge emphasis processing section 8 applies edge emphasis processing to the smoothed image. |
