PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce crosstalk caused in the case of recording/reproducing a low frequency conversion chrominance signal through reciprocal running of a tape with respect to a helical scan type VTR. SOLUTION: A phase of a low frequency conversion chrominance subcarrier signal to be recorded is rotated by each horizontal scanning period and the phase rotation angle is changed between the forward running and the reverse running of the tape. For example, in the case of driving the tape forward, the phase of the low frequency conversion chrominance subcarrier signal to be recorded is rotated by 90 degrees each by each horizontal scanning period, and in the case of driving the tape backward, the phase of the low frequency conversion chrominance subcarrier signal to be recorded is rotated by 90 degrees each in an opposite direction to above by each horizontal scanning period. Or in the case of either of driving the tape forward or backward, the phase of the low frequency conversion chrominance subcarrier signal to be recorded is rotated by 180 degrees each by each horizontal scanning period, and in the other case, the signal is recorded as it is without rotating the phase.
