The present invention relates to compositions and methods for increasing the bioavailability of chemical substances. In particular, alkylated and acetylated chemical compositions and methods for their natural incorporation into cells is provided. In one embodiment, alkylated and acetylated hemoglobin allosteric effectors are incorporated into red blood cells. These compositions and methods are useful for reducing the affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen and improving the release of oxygen from erythrocytes in tissues.
