The cylinder liner (3) is held in place at the cylinder block (1) by welds (6,8) at both end sides (5,7). The liner is mated by diffusion welding at the evacuated gap zone (4). The cylinder liner (3) has a collar (9) at one end side (7), supported by a step (11) at the cylinder block. The cylinder block is heated to a temp. of 150-200 degrees centigrade, and the cylinder liner is heated to 400-500 degrees centigrade for the diffusion welding. The mechanical weld are made after the cylinder block and the cylinder liner have cooled.
