A process for preparing paroxetine hydrochloride acetone solvate, in which a solution of paroxetine base, or a salt of paroxetine with an organic acid, in an organic solvent is treated with aqueous hydrochloric acid, the solution is then distilled to reduce the amount of water present and is then treated with acetone to afford paroxetine hydrochloride acetone solvate as a crystalline solid.
