A bale press comprises tine-shaped compacting elements (6, 6') which are mounted to be pivotable about pivot points (5, 5') for the inward and outward pivotal movement during reciprocating linear movement. The compacting elements are provided with guide rollers (10, 10') which are guided around guide tracks (13, 13'), the initial region of the outward pivotal movement of which is constructable is pivotable control switch point (16, 16'). The rollers lie externally against the guide tracks, between the two compacting elements, under the spring force of a spring damping device (12). A pawl stop (20), at which a slide rail (21) is disposed, is provided at the turning point between reverse outward pivotal movement and forward inward pivotal movement. <IMAGE>
