PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for preparing a hydrogenated alicyclic olefin polymer which achieves a high hydrogenation rate at a low temperature and allows an easy removal of catalysts after the hydrogenation reaction. SOLUTION: In a process for preparing a hydrogenated alicyclic olefin polymer, a cyclic olefin polymer such as a norbornene ring-opened polymer is hydrogenated in the presence of a supported catalyst for hydrogenation which contains a metal chosen from nickel, palladium and platinum which has a crystal diameter of <=100Åand is preferably carried on a support chosen from alumina, diatomaceous earth, titanium oxide, silica, silica alumina and carbon, to convert an aromatic ring and/or carbon-carbon unsaturated bond into a saturated bond.
