PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new carbonaceous material meeting a combination of requirements of lightweightness from the viewpoint of energy saving and easy operability as well as high mechanical strength at high temperatures (high thermal shock resistance), high reliability as a material (high toughness, impact resistance and abrasion resistance), high environmental resistance (high resistances to corrosion, oxidation and radiation), or the like, and also, substantially not oxidized even at temperatures of as high as >=800 deg.C under poor-oxygen conditions, and to provide a method for producing such a new carbonaceous material. SOLUTION: This carbonaceous material substantially not oxidized even at temperatures of as high as >=800 deg.C under poor- and obtained by forming an oxidationproof protective layer therefore consisting of silicon carbide and metallic silicon in a poor oxygen atmosphere is obtained through such a process that the surface of a carbonaceous material is wrapped with a carbonaceous paper impregnated with a slurry containing metallic silicon and a phenolic resin followed by preliminarily baking the paper in an inert atmosphere at <=1,000 deg.C to effect carbonization of the phenolic resin, temperature is then raised to 1,420-2,200 deg.C in the identical atmosphere to effect reaction of substantially the whole amount of the metallic silicon with the resultant carbon.
