PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a structure for inducing free rotation of a spool of a double-bearing fishing reel having minimized frictional force acting between a spool shaft and a pinion when the pinion is separated from the spool shaft. SOLUTION: The structure for inducing free rotation of the spool of the double-bearing fishing reel is provided with the spool shaft 5 and the pinion 8. The spool shaft 5 is composed of a small-diameter part 5c, large-diameter parts 5a placed at the right and left of the small-diameter part and a step 5b having a diameter equal to that of the large-diameter part and the pinion 8 has an expanded groove 8b on the hole 8a to accept the large-diameter part of the spool shaft. The large diameter part and the step are brought into contact with the hole of the pinion in the case of transmitting the rotational force by coupling the pinion with the spool shaft and, to the contrary, the step of the spool shaft is positioned in the expanded groove of the pinion to minimize the friction between the spool shaft and the pinion when the pinion is separated from the spool shaft to allow the free rotation of the spool.
