PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize a recording apparatus emitting ink particles from the a large number of the jet orifices arranged on a head in a lateral direction thereof and capable of accurately detecting the presence of the ink particles emitted from the discharge orifices. SOLUTION: A recording apparatus has a head having a large number of jet orifices 2 emitting ink particles 5 arranged thereon in the lateral direction thereof and a discharge sensor 3 detecting the presence of the ink particles emitted from the jet orifices in front of the head. The discharge sensor 3 is constituted of an the oblong opening part 4 in which ink particles 5 emitted from a large number of the jet orifices 2 rush in, an infrared sensor 6 provided in opposed relation to both sides of the vertical advance direction of the ink particles 5 on the downstream side of the opening part 4 and a front reflecting surface 7.
