Preparing a topical composition from mother of pearl, is new. Preparing a topical composition comprises: (a) reducing a mother of pearl to a powder having a particle size of 1- 300 micro m, especially 15 - 50 micro m; (b) contacting the powder with an extraction agent which is an aqueous glycolic solution of a collagen and one or more proteoglycans; and (c) the mixture is recovered. Optionally this may be then be separated into a solid and a liquid phase. The weight ratio of water:glycol used may vary between 1:100 and 100:1. Marine collagen is preferably used, the commercial products Pancogene Marin (RTM) or Collagen Natif Marin - Code 690 (RTM) being preferred. Amounts of collagen in the range of 0.0001 - 50 % are used. The proteoglycan used may be hyaluronic acid, chondroitin sulfate, dermatane sulfate, eperane sulfate, keratane sulfate and their mixtures. Solutions containing 0.0001 - 40 % hyaluronic acid are preferred. The product contains aragonite, trace elements (Na, Mg, La, Zn, Br, Cs, Fe, Mn, Cl, Cu, K, Ca, Sr, S), fibrous proteins, non-fibrous proteins, and collagens and/or proteoglycans that have not derived from the mother of pearl. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) compositions made by the new process; and (2) use of the compositions for dermatological or cosmetic uses.
