Metal (alloy) workpiece is surface hardened by continuously passing the elongated workpiece through a fluidised bed maintained above a gas nozzle surface located in a furnace. The workpieces are passed either around the nozzle surface or through openings in the surface. The workpieces of any cross-sectional shape are joined together by adapters of similar dia. to that of the workpieces thereby enabling continuous upward movement. They can be treated on outer surfaces by arranging a fluidised bed outside the tube section. Wire is treated by passing from one roller to another located below and above the furnace. The wire passes through holes in the fluidised bed base.
