PURPOSE: An exhaust gas purifying method is provided to previously activate a catalyst of a ternary catalytic device and to keep stable the temperature of the catalyst by controlling the temperature of exhaust gas. CONSTITUTION: An exhaust gas purifying method comprises the steps of: calculating temperature of a catalyst before ignition upon turning on of an ignition switch(IG) corresponding to the temperatures of external air and cooling water(S10,S11,S12); comparing the temperatures calculated before and after ignition to a reference temperature predetermined for purifying noxious gases contained in exhaust gas(S13); increasing or decreasing the temperature of the exhaust gas for previously activating the catalyst or keeping the temperature of the catalyst in the reference temperature according to the result of comparison(S14); and returning to the temperature comparison step(S13) after calculating temperature of the catalyst corresponding to the temperature change of the exhaust gas after ignition(S15). If the temperature of the exhaust gas is increased, the temperature of the catalyst of a ternary catalytic device is increased and the catalyst is activated previously. Then, the exhaust gas is purified by the activated catalyst. With direct control of the temperature of the exhaust gas, the temperature of the catalyst is kept stable.
