PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently resolve the problem of a black trail caused by a photomultiplier while suppressing the rise of the cost with respect to a radiation image reader which reads both sides of a stimulable phosphor sheet. SOLUTION: In the radiation image reader, stimulated phosphorescent light M1 and M2 which are emitted from a front side 1d and a rear side 1c of a stimulable phosphor sheet 1 by scanning the sheet 1 with exciting light are read by photomultipliers arranged on the front side and the rear side of the sheet 1, and a long-sized photomultiplier 16a having a higher cathode linearity is used for the front side, and a head-on type photomultiplier 16b having a lower cathode linearity is used for the rear side.
