A medical device such as an endoscope has an elongated flexible sheath (12). A first sleeve (20) has a passage (24) therethrough which snugly receives the sheath (12), the first sheath (12) being slideable from its proximal end to its distal end. The sleeve (20) is a thin-walled tube having a constant inner diameter so as to minimize the increase of the outer dimension of the device (12) at the portion upon which the sleeve (20) is positioned. The sleeve (20) has a length of approximately one-half the length of the sheath (12) and may have greater stiffness than the sheath (12). A second sleeve (22) may be slideably mounted on the first sleeve (20) and has a snug fit therewith. The second sleeve (22) is also a thin-walled tube having a constant dimension. The second sleeve (22) has a length of approximately one-half the length of the first sleeve (20) and may have greater stiffness than the first sleeve (20).
|
