To extract water from a wet paper/cardboard web (12), the water is forced from the web (12) by a hot gas (14). The water extraction unit (18) has at least a partial thermal insulation. The gas (14) for the water displacement is compressed by a compressor (32) with thermal insulation. It is heated at least partially by the compression effect and it is also heated at least partially by the addition of hot steam. Or the gas (14) is hot steam or air. An Independent claim is included for an assembly (10) where the wet web (12) is subjected to hot gas (14) to displace the water. Preferred Features: A compressor (32) is in front of the pressure chamber (18), which has its outlet side (20) opposite a counter surface (22) which supports the web (12) moving through the gap (24) between them, together with a fourdrinier or blanket (26). The counter surface (22) is formed by a roller (28) with a flexible roller mantle (28'), to give a straight passage through the gap (24). Or the counter surface is formed by a roller with a rigid mantle, to form a curved path through the gap (24) between it and the pressure chamber surface (20). The pressure chamber (18) can be formed in a zone between pref. four rollers.
