A polarized light spectroscopic device for producing p- or s-polarized light from white light. The polarized light spectroscopic characteristics are improved without increasing the device scale. Even if a polarized light absorbing film is provided so as to further improve the polarized light spectroscopic characteristics, the thermal load on the polarized light absorbing film is light, and the amount of heat generated is small. The polarized light spectroscopic device (28b) having such advantages is structured as shown in Figure 7. A polarized light absorbing film (32) is provided between right-angle prisms (14, 16), and polarized light spectroscopic films (18(1), 18(2)) are secured between the polarized absorbing film (32) and the right-angle prism (14) and between the polarized absorbing film (32) and the right-angle prism (16). A picture projector comprising such a polarized light spectroscopic device is also disclosed.
