A flexible blade is used as a metering device by being inserted at a ni p formed between a radiused profile portion of a fixed, rigid loading element and a substrate roll. The flexible blade is forced to take the shape of the profile portion at the nip, and thereby meter the coating to a desired thickness and consistency. Inflatable air tubes engage the loading element to adjust the overall thickness of the coating.
