PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operating method for a pump turbine, capable of minimizing the generation of cavitation and enlarging the width of operation. SOLUTION: With the operating method of a pump turbine, which is related this invention, a pump turbine A incorporating either out of a slitter type runner vane 4 and a multiblade runner vane 5, is operated preferentially at the time of low head of generating operation, at the time of high pump head of pumping operation, and at the time of partial load of generating operation.
