PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electric motor assist bicycle capable of generating torque for stepping without consuming wasteful electric power. SOLUTION: This bicycle is furnished with a torque detection means 130 to detect stepping torque, a stepping period setting means 96 to detect a state where the stepping torque is larger than specified standard torque and to set a stepping period to make its detection time point as a starting point and an assist ratio changing means 98 to change an assist ratio to an assist ratio for stepping larger than the assist ratio at the time of steady travelling in a stepping period.
