PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely read a data symbol by prescribed positioning even when the directivity of an information recording symbol is erroneous. SOLUTION: In this read method of the information recording symbol, the information recording symbol 4 for which at least one of merchandise information and sound information is recorded and printed at a prescribed part beforehand and a prescribed read port 15 provided on this reader 7 are positioned by prescribed positioning means 6 and 15' and read is performed. The short side dimension X of the read area of an image sensor 21 for optically reading the information recording symbol 4 inside the reader 7 is made larger than the dimension Y of the long side direction of the printed information recording symbol 4.
