PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To miniaturize a connector. SOLUTION: A female housing 20 is provided with a terminal compartment 21 for accommodating a female side terminal fitting 24, and a rubber ring 33 which provides protection against water by making close contact with the inner peripheral surface of the hood part 11 of a male housing 10 mating into the female housing 20 is fitted over the peripheral surface of the terminal compartment 21. Also, a spring holder 50 accommodating a coil spring 60 having a spring retainer 59 at its front end is assembled between the terminal compartment 21 and an outer cylinder portion 23. The mating action of both housings 10, 20 enables the rubber ring 33 to move from a temporarily locked position where it secures a space between its inner surface and the outer surface of the locking part 31 of a retainer 30 to a normal position where it is brought into close contact with the overall periphery of the terminal compartment 21. Before the housings mate with each other, the spring retainer 59 of the spring holder 50 is made to abut against the rear face of the rubber ring 33 placed in the temporarily locked position.
