PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain automatic reception of a telephone speech, even when manual reception or automatic reception is set. SOLUTION: In the case of a manual reception mode ('YES' in S1), a ringing signal is detected (YES in S2), and when a telephone set is not hooked off ('NO' in S3), an automatic reception mode is selected (S4). When the ringing signal is detected after that (YES in S5), Fax reception is stared (S6). When the reception is established, a Fax reception counter is incremented to store the time (S8). When the reception is not established (No in S7), a speech counter is incremented to store the time (S9). When the telephone set is hooked off (YES in S3) and the operation after that is the Fax reception (YES in S10), the Fax reception counter is incremented to store the time (S11). When the operation is not the Fax reception (NO in S10), the speech counter is incremented and the time is stored (S12). Manual reception mode is selected after that (S21).
