PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To divide multi-level image data to be inputted into a plurality of binary images and to conveniently and also to quickly divide the information into each of the binary images into each area of a character, a photograph and a dot on the basis of a rectangular information in each of the binary images. SOLUTION: The area separation processing part 19 of this image processor comprises a threshold setting means 23 setting a plurality of thresholds for generating a plurality of binary images from multi-level image data, a rectangular information extracting means 26 for extracting rectangular information from the binary images generated on the basis of the means 23 and a rectangular information comparing means 27 for comparing the rectangular information extracted by the means 26. The multi-level image data are divided into a plurality of planes by performing binarization processing of the multi-level image data, the rectangular information of the image is extracted in each of the planes, and the category of the image is also decided on the basis of the characteristic quantity of the rectangular information.
