The characteristics of a fuel cell are restored by operating the fuel cell in a load current mode different from the mode of the normal operation for a predetermined time, supplying an oxidizer gas and a fuel gas to the anode and cathode respectively, taking out current from the fuel cell body with the polarity opposite, supplying oxygen to the cathode, supplying a compressed gas under pressure 1.5 times higher than that in the normal operation at least to one of the cathode and anode, and injecting a cleaning agent to the cathode and anode through a gas passage. Thus the deteriorated characteristics of a polymer electrolyte fuel cell due to long operation is effectively restored.
|
