A multi-plate clutch assembly 14, 16, for a tractor, comprises two linings 18, 20 acted on by pressure plates 10, 12 which are urged apart by a plate spring 22. An intermediate plate 24 lies between the plate spring 22 and the pressure plate 12 which has a wear adjusting device comprising first and second tapered rings 34, 36 biassed relative to each other by a spring 38. This arrangement ensures that the position of the plate spring 22 remains constant in a closed state of the clutch. Maximum permissible spacing between the pressure plates 10 and 12 is controlled by a stepped bolt 52 mounted axially moveable in the pressure plate 10 and intermediate plate 24. The intermediate plate 24 is operated by lever 26 attached to the intermediate plate 24 via intermediate lever 28 while another set of levers, either on the same side (see fig 12) or on an engine side, operate clutch 14. |
