PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject fluorescence detector capable of accurately inspecting paper sheets by the irradiation with ultraviolet rays and also accelerated in miniaturization. SOLUTION: A fluorescence detector 10 for paper sheets is constituted so as to irradiate a paper sheet 7 (paper mooney) with ultraviolet rays on the way of the feed of the paper sheet to detect the fluorescence emitted from the paper sheet 7 and equipped with the ultraviolet LED 12 housed in a housing 11 to irradiate the feed route 4 of the paper sheet 7 with light the ultraviolet transmission filter 15 housed in the housing to be arranged between the ultraviolet LED 12 and the feed route 4 to permit the ultraviolet component in the irradiated light to transmit and the ultraviolet monitor 18 housed in the housing 11 to detect the ultraviolet component reflected by the ultraviolet transmission filter 15 to return in the light emitted from the ultraviolet LED 12 and, on the basis of the output signal from the ultraviolet monitor 18, the quantity of light of the ultraviolet LED 12 is controlled.
