PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate the up- and down fluctuation of an image reading means in the midst of scanning and to stabilize the reading accuracy by inclining the shaft of at least either of wound transmitting means for transmitting driving force to the image read means so that the component of force of the tension of the wound transmitting member in the opposite direction to an image read surface may be increased. SOLUTION: A line sensor unit 2 is mounted on a holding member and moved by a driving belt 55, and two driving pulleys 54 are fit to the respective shafts 61 fixed on a main body base 5. And, either shaft 61 is inclined to the wall side of the nearest main body base 5 in a scanning direction, that is, in the opposite direction to the other shaft side. Therefore, the component Fθ2 of the belt tension F is directed downward. Since the component Fθ2 of the belt tension F is increased in the opposite direction to the image read surface, stable image read can be realized without the up- and down fluctuation of the unit 2 in the midst of scanning, and the reading accuracy is stabilized.
