An optical fiber fusion splicing device comprising two holder bases (2) for holding two optical fibers (1) to be fusion spliced oppositely, a splicing base (5) disposed between both holder bases (2) and having a guide groove (4) into which the stripped end parts (3) of the two optical fibers (1) are fitted, and a fiber clamp (6) turning to a position above the guide groove (4) from a waiting position to press the end parts (3) of the optical fibers (1) is provided with a sensor (7) for detecting release of the press of the end parts (3) of the optical fibers (1). When the release is detected by means of the sensor (7), one or both of the two holder bases (2) moves automatically in the direction opposite to the direction where the optical fibers (1) are butted and pulls the optical fibers (1) for screening.
