The invention relates to a method in which particles made of ferrous titanium, niobium or vanadium are dispersed and thermally compacted in a metal matrix powder made from hardenable steel or heat-resistant alloys. Titanium, niobium or vanadium carbide are obtained in situ by a solid reaction, i.e. without melting from the carbon mixed or contained in the matrix powder and the ferrous alloy particles. Carbon can be absorbed from the gas-phase and substituted by nitrogen. Said method enables cost-effective introduction of hard particles of an appropriate size into a composite material so as to provide protection against scratch-producing wear and tear.
