The method involves calibrating a speed measuring system, with which the speed of a passing carriage is determined by means of two, sequentially measuring contacts under consideration of a predetermined contact distance value. A wheelbase of passing carriages is determined from a measurement under consideration of the measured speed, and it is adaptively determined, whether the carriages belong to predetermined carriage groups with predetermined lower and upper nominal wheelbases. A corrected contact distance value corresponding to an actual contact distance, is formed from the determined wheelbases of the passing carriages, and the corrected contact distance value is used instead of the initial contact distance value for subsequent measurements.
