PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a nematic liquid crystal composition of which the birefringence can be adjusted in a wide range and which is drivable in a wide temperature range and at a low voltage by incorporating compounds selected from among compounds belonging to two kinds of groups into the same. SOLUTION: This nematic liquid crystal composition contains a liquid crystal component A which comprises a compound represented by formula I and a compound selected from among compounds belonging to the groups of compounds represented by formulas II, III and IV, wherein R1 to R3 are each 1-10C alkyl or 2-10C alkenyl; Q1 is F, Cl, CF3, OCF3, OCF2H, OCFH2, NCS or CN; X1 to X3 are each H, F, Cl, CF3, OCF3 or CN provided X3 may be CH3; and W1 to W4 are each H, F, Cl, CF3, OCF3 or CN provided at least one of W1 to W4 in formula I is F, Cl, CF3 or OCF3. In addition to liquid crystal component A, this composition contains 0-99.9 wt.% liquid crystal component B comprising a compound having a permittivity anisotropy of +2 or higher and 0-85 wt.% liquid crystal component C comprising a compound having a permittivity anisotropy of -10 to +2, the sum of components B and C being 0-99.9 wt.%.
