[Classes 79 (i), 79 (ii), 79 (iii) and 79 (v)] In a tractor of the type in which the power unit and transmission mechanism can oscillate about the rear axle, the anchor plates for the rear wheel brakes are secured to the chassis. The brake anchor plates are formed with bearings at their centres, in which the ends of the rear axle housing can pivot, the halfshafts being rotatably mounted in the ends of the rear axle housing ; alternatively the brake anchor plates and the ends of the rear axle housing may both be rotatable about the half shafts. With such an arrangement, the vehicle can be braked independently of the oscillating movements of the power unit. The tractor comprises a power unit, radiator and tanks 4, 5, 6, which, together with the transmission mechan. ism 8 can oscillate about the rear axle 9 whilst the chassis frame 1 and front steering wheels 2 remain stationary, a bolt 15 and detent 17 being provided on the two parts to lock them together. The brake lever 11 is mounted on the frame member 1. As shown, in Fig. 3, the brake anchor plates 18 carrying the brake shoes 24 for the rear driving wheels 3 are secured to the chassis frame 1, in the example shown, the anchor plate is appropriately shaped for the purpose, but intermediate brackets may be used. The anchor plate 18 is provided with a central bearing 19 so that the end 20 of the rear axle housing 21 can pivot therein during oscillating movements of the power unit, the half-shafts 9 being rotatably mounted in the ends of the rear axle casing. The brake drums 10 are fast with the wheel hub 25, as usual. In a modification, Fig. 5, the brake anchor plate 18 and the end of the rear axle casing 21 are both rotatably mounted on the half-shaft 9. In a further modification, Fig. 11, a reduction gear 45, 46 may be provided, enclosed in a housing 48, 49 integral with the rear axle casing, such housing having a portion 50 which corresponds to the part 29 of Fig. 3. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the brake anchor plate 18, Figs. 3 or 5, instead of being rigidly fixed to the axle casing 21 or the frame member 1 could be rotatably mounted on the axle and could be locked to the axle casing or frame by a bolt. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
