PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent dropping of a sheet by means of an automatic paper feed device which holds a sheet in an upright condition, and to reduce back- tension. SOLUTION: In such a separating system that a separating pad 241 is made into press contact with a round paper feed roller 28 so as to separate a sheet therebetween, the separating pad 241 is spaced from the paper feed roller 28 after the separation of the sheet, and a rotary roller 251 is arranged so that the separating pad 241 which has been spaced, is made into press contact with or is spaced therefrom. With this arrangement, satisfactory accuracy of conveyance can be obtained while only a small back-tension is exerted to the sheet, and dropping of the sheet can be prevented.
