PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a key and a locking device capable of displaying the lock and unlock condition without electric power consumption. SOLUTION: This locking device is constituted of a key 1 provided with a display part 11 constituted out of a liquid crystal composition having memorizing property and a cylinder lock 2 having electrodes 24a, 24b, 25a, 25b supplying electric power to electrodes 15a, 15b for driving the display part 11. When locking is operated, power is supplied from the electrodes 25a, 25b, liquid crystal becomes in planar state and display part 11 displays a specific color. When unlocking is operated, power is supplied from the electrodes 24a, 24b, the liquid crystal becomes in focal conic state and the display part 11 displays solid color or white color. Instead of the key 1 a card key can be used.
