PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a transparent, colorless and high- quality aromatic polycarbonate at a high polymerization rate without causing a violent foaming phenomenon. SOLUTION: An aromatic diol compound and a carbonic acid diester are subjected to a transesterification reaction in the presence of a hydrocarbon compound having at least one functional group selected from the group consisting of a hydroxyl group, a carboxyl group and an amino group and derivative groups thereof in a concentration of 50-3,000μeq/g. Preferably, the hydrocarbon compound has a number-average mol.wt. of 500-20,000.
