The invention concerns a steam iron whereof the soleplate consists of a moulded aluminium heating body (1) comprising the single heating element (3) of the iron, a temperature regulating thermostat and an evaporating chamber (4) coated on its wet surfaces with a coating layer (6) with low heat conductivity, and a top (18) in thermal and mechanical connection with the moulded body (1). The structure of the body (1), the top (18) and/or their contact surface are arranged such that the mean temperature of the body is at least 7 DEG C higher than that of the top, when the thermostat is adjusted for the mean temperature of the top to be less than 120 DEG C.
