PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To relatively increase discharge retaining period to improve luminance, by charging an address voltage into a charge element provided for a discharge cell and then retaining the discharge for period proportional to the value of the address voltage. SOLUTION: Retain discharge is started at a different timing for an address period Ap with an address voltage charged into a capacity C every discharge cell corresponding a video signal, and retained for a period while retain voltage pulses Sp1, Sp2 are supplied to a pair of retain electrodes. For example, the higher is the charged address voltage, the earlier is a start point of the retain discharge, and the earlier is the start point of the retain discharge, the longer is the retain discharge period. Thus, because each discharge cell releases visible light proportionally to the retain discharge period, corresponding gray scale is displayed. As a result, the address period decreases, the retain discharge period relatively increases, and luminance is improved. |
