PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emitting device having a large effective area ratio. SOLUTION: A light emitting device includes a fluorescent lamp 10 for displaying having an airtight vessel configured so that the opening of a front face side vessel 18 furnished integrally with a translucent wall part 32 and peripheral wall part 34 is blocked with a rear lid, consisting of a bottom plate 20 and cathode chamber 16, and on the translucent wall part 32, no sealant 42 should necessarily be provided on any of the obverse surface 32a and inner surface 32b. This allows properly suppressing shrinkage of the effective light emission area caused by influx of the sealant 42 to the internal circumference on the translucent wall part 32, wherefrom light is emitted, and no change will be generated in the light emission area resulting from the coated condition of the sealant 42. Because the rear lid is attached fast with the sealant 42 applied from the side with rear surface 40, in such a manner that the circumferential end face 38 of the bottom plate 20 confronts the internal circumferential surface 34b of the peripheral wall part of the front face side vessel 18 and is located inside the surface 34b, it is also possible to suppress enlargement of the outside dimensions of the airtight vessel caused by bulging-out of the sealant 42 from the peripheral wall part 34.
