PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably ensure superior potential characteristics in any environment from that at a low temperature and low humidity to that at high temperature and high humidity and to continuously form superior images by forming a middle layer containing colloidal silica and siloxane resin. SOLUTION: The electrophotographic photoreceptor has a middle layer containing colloidal silica and siloxane resin. A composition for the middle layer is prepared by preferably dispersing 10-70 wt.% colloidal silica and 30-90 wt.% siloxane resin as solid components in a 1-50 wt.% lower alcohol-water mixed solution. The particle diameter is preferably 5-150 nm, further preferably 10-30 nm. The composition is adjusted to an acidic state of pH 3.0-6.0 with an inorganic or organic acid.
