<p>A generally cylindrical drill, particularly an insert drill having multiple cutting inserts (16, 18), helical chip grooves (24) to clear the chips from the hole, and a gripping shank (22) opposite the cutting end (12) of the drill, wherein the drill experiences an unbalanced resultant transverse force (40) upon the cutting tip (12) of the drill, and that resultant (40) is oriented perpendicularly to an axial plane containing the neutral axis (36) of the maximum bending stress adjacent to its juncture with the gripping shank (22).</p> |
