Inducing and detecting various functional states in cells, organelles, viruses, molecular aggregates and biomolecules on a surface, or in a medium, comprising using a surface or medium that has different binding properties at different sites, is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) producing a fibronectin gradient on a surface, comprising: (a) immobilizing a material selected from gelatin, collagen and their fragments and biotinylated or digoxigenylated derivatives on the surface; (b) treating the surface with blood plasma or a fibronectin solution; and (c) treating the surface with a urea gradient; and (2) producing a laminin gradient on a surface, comprising: (a) immobilizing a material selected from gelatin, collagen and their fragments and biotinylated or digoxigenylated derivatives on the surface; (b) treating the surface with a laminin or laminin/nidogen solution; and (c) treating the surface with a urea gradient.
