A procedure for measuring the maximum valve lift in a combustion engine gas exchange valves (2), in which in each valve operation the maximum valve lift is measured (1), followed by count-enabling an incremental counter after each valve lift measurement, and the state of the incremental counter is then checked by a unit (control function) (4) utilising the maximum valve lift, prior to use of the maximum valve lift. With the state of the incremental counter unchanged from the last use of the maximum valve lift by the unit, the last used value of the maximum valve lift is used as the relevant or current value. With the state of the incremental counter changed from the last use of the maximum valve lift, a new value of the maximum valve lift is read-out/selected and used as the relevant or current value. The incremental counter is count-enabled to 0 after the maximum counter state, specifically 255, is reached.
