In a wireless communications network (10), a method of providing Time of Arrival (TOA) positioning data that minimizes the use of traffic channels within the network. The method comprising the steps of assigning a signaling channel (62) to an idle mobile station (12) within the network (10), causing a handover (68) of the mobile station (12) directly from the signaling channel (62) to a traffic channel (66), causing the mobile station (12) to generate an access burst during handover (68), and utilizing the access burst to provide TOA positioning data for the mobile station (12).
