A basket to manipulate scrap in cooperation with an arc furnace and with means to preheat the scrap by the fumes from the forth hole (14) and with the basket able to be covered comprises an upper part which functions as a storage and safety area, a lower part which defines the area containing the scrap and a bottom equipped with toothed containing means which can be momentarily opened. Lateral extensions are provided to position and move the basket and the capacity of the lower part matches the volume of the load of the melting furnace.
