PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound not exerting an undesirable influence on endo/exo selectivity, having no problem under an industrial condition by reacting a substituted cyclopentenone with an organometallic compound, then adding an inorganic strong acid thereto and carrying out dehydration. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I (R is a 1-20C hydrocarbon; R4 to R6 are each H or a 1-20C hydrocarbon) is reacted with a compound of formula II (R2 and R3 are each H or a 1-20C hydrocarbon; M is Li, MgCl, MgBr or MgI) in an inert organic solvent to form a compound of formula III. The inert solvent is separated and removed, if necessary, the reaction product is formulated with an organic solvent immiscible with water and then an aqueous inorganic strong acid is added thereto to perform proton addition and dehydration of the compound of formula III to form a compound of formula IV or formula V. Successively, the acid aqueous phase is separated and removed and an organic phase comprising the compound of formula IV or formula V is subjected to aftertreatment to give the objective substituted cyclopentadiene.
